Fiber optic cables do not have a traditional electrical signal line; they transmit information using light pulses through optical fibers.Fiber optic cables are composed of extremely thin strands of glass or plastic called optical fibers, each about the width of a human hair, arranged in bundles within a protective jacket . These fibers carry data by transmitting light signals, which are encoded with information at the source and decoded at the receiving end . The light travels through the fiber core by total internal reflection, bouncing off the cladding that surrounds the core, allowing the signal to travel long distances with minimal loss . Unlike copper cables, fiber optics do not rely on electrical currents to carry signals. Instead, the "signal" is entirely optical, meaning there is no metal conductor or traditional signal line inside the cable . Devices called transceivers convert electrical signals from computers or telecommunication equipment into light pulses for transmission and then back into electrical signals at the destination . This allows fiber optic cables to support extremely high bandwidths, long-distance communication, and immunity to electromagnetic interference . Fiber optic cables come in single-mode and multi-mode types. Single-mode fibers have a very thin core and transmit light straight down the center, suitable for long-distance applications like internet, telephone, and cable TV . Multi-mode fibers have a larger core, allowing light to travel in multiple paths, and are typically used for shorter distances, such as within buildings or data centers . In summary, fiber optic cables do not contain a conventional signal line; the information is carried entirely by light within the optical fibers, making them fundamentally different from traditional copper-based cables .
